FRIDAY'S PREVIEW...
UNLV (10-2/6-2) will play in its third consecutive Mountain West Football Championship game by traveling to face Boise State (8-4/6-2) Friday night on FOX ... The Rebels will look to earn their first league championship since 1994 as a member of the Big West Conference ... UNLV has now received at least one vote in either the AP or Coaches' poll for the 33rd time in the last 34 polls ... The Rebels started a season 9-2 for a third straight year and have now earned double-digit victories for only the fourth time in school history and first time in back-to-back campaigns ... UNLV joins Boise State as the only programs to play in at least three consecutive MW title games (BSU did it twice -- 2022-25 and 2017-20) and this marks just the third time in FBS history that the same teams faced each other in three straight championships ... The Rebs, who earned bowl-eligibility for the third straight season for the first time ever, lead all of college football with 11 road wins since the start of last season and are also tied for the eighth-most overall wins in the FBS since the start of the 2024 season with 21 ... The Rebels are 15-4 in true road games since the start of 2023 after only winning eight total road games in the previous six seasons (8-25) ... UNLV ranks eighth nationally in third-down conversion defense, only allowing opponents to convert at a 29-percent clip ... Since falling 35-7 at eventual national champion Michigan in the second game of 2023, UNLV has scored at least 20 points in each of its last 34 regular-season games. That's the longest active such streak in the FBS (Miami is next at 27 games).Â
REBELS vs. BRONCOS NOTES...Â
This will mark the fifth time these programs have met each other in just 25 months ... BSU's win over UNLV in Boise in October gave it a 12-3 lead in the overall series and the Rebs are looking for their first win over the Broncos since America's Bicentennial and first ever in Boise ... The two schools played for six straight seasons in the 1970s but ended the series when UNLV, which was a football independent, moved up to D-I status in 1978 ... In a unique twist, these schools share a former head coach who left each side as the all-time winningest for both programs. Tony Knap, who died in 2011 at the age of 96, was 47-20-2 over six seasons at UNLV after leaving BSU, where he was 71-19-1 from 1968-75 (Chris Petersen passed Knap for wins in 2011).
