LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – In spite of facing windy conditions, UNLV men's golf senior
Caden Fioroni grabbed a day-one lead to help the Rebels sit in second at the end of Sunday's opening round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Golf Club (Par 72, 7,510 yards).
ATOP THE LEADERBOARD: Fioroni didn't let the gusts affect him as he carded a first-round 5-under 67, including a bogey-free front nine and three straight birdies to close the day. He holds a three-shot lead over Auburn's Josiah Gilbert and Pepperdine's William Walsh.
REBEL ROUNDUP: The Rebels (+2) sit three shots off the team lead held by the No. 2 Tigers, who shot a 1-under 287. Alongside Fioroni in the Scarlet & Gray lineup are junior
Wyatt Plattner (+1) in a tie for 11th, sophomore
Zach Little (+2) in a tie for 18th, senior
Trevor Lewis (+4) in a tie for 30th and senior
Ben Sawaia (+9) in a tie for 69th.
Playing as individuals, sophomore
Dillon Dean's even-par 72 places him in a tie for sixth,
Billy Smith (+5) is tied for 41st and junior
Brett Sawaia (+10) rounds them out in a tie for 74th.
