SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – Behind four final-round par-or-better scores Wednesday, the UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 4-under 346 to finish tied for third to end the regular season at the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club (par 70, 6,5111 yards).
REBEL FINISH: Seniors
Wyatt Plattner and
Brett Sawaia led the way with their 3-under 67 rounds to bring home the Rebels' fourth top-5 finish of the spring. Tallying an under-par scorecard, junior
Mason Snyder carded a 1-under 69 for the second straight day. The freshman Aaron van Hauwe assisted with an even-par 70.
As a team, the Scarlet & Gray tied the day's lowest score en route to an 8-under 1042 for the three-day event hosted by San Jose State. Among the round's highlights, the Rebels' five scorers went 5-under on the par-5 ninth with two eagles and two birdies and par-5 13th hole with an eagle and three birdies. Plattner and Sawaia both eagled nine, while Little pitched in a Golf Channel highlight shot for another eagle on 13 for the second consecutive day.
REBEL ROUNDUP: Claiming his second top-10 finish of the year, Snyder placed 10th with a 4-under 206 through 54 holes. Little walked away with his sixth straight top-15 outing, landing in 15th with a 2-under 208 for the tournament. Joining them in the top 30, Plattner and van Hauwe each tied for 30th at 1-over 211. Rounding out the lineup were Sawaia (+3) in 40th and Lewis (+5) in 46th.
CHAMPIONS: USC held off Cal by one shot to win the team title at 13-under 1037. Sharing co-medalist honors, the Trojans' Jack Buchanan and Stanford's Dean Greyserman - who matched the former's tournament single-round record with a 62 - both finished at 10-under 200.
UP NEXT: UNLV will prepare for the Mountain West Championship set to take place from May 3-5 at OMNI Tucson National.
NOTES:
- UNLV has now posted four top-5 finishes this spring. Along with the Western, the squad has notched a tied-for-second finish (John A. Burns Intercollegiate), a third-place finish (Southwestern Invitational) and a fourth-place finish (Wyoming Cowboy Classic).
- This marked the third tournament of the spring season that saw the Rebels finish ahead of at least three top-25 teams on the final leaderboard. At Pasatiempo, UNLV placed ahead of No. 13 Pepperdine, No. 18 Stanford and No. 22 Arizona. They also ended up tied with No. 24 BYU.
