LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – In a matchup of two 10-3 women's tennis teams on Friday, UNLV emerged with a key, 4-2, Mountain West victory over Boise State on a sunny and warm day at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels, who have won four straight outings, improved to 11-3 and 2-0 in the MW while the Broncos fell to 10-4 and 1-2 in league play. UNLV has now won three straight and 10 of the last 12 meetings with Boise State.
Doubles saw a dramatic ending after the teams split the top two matches, including
Cindy Hu and
Coco Zhao rolling past Ryan Kershner and Lorelyz Marruffo, 6-1, on court two. The teams battled back and forth down at the No. 3 spot before
Kaho Oyama and
Sofiia Sokolvak fought off Paula Schaefer and Bhakti Shah, 7-5, to secure UNLV the team point.
The squads split the six first sets in singles play and the hosts were eventually able to close it out with a trio of straight-setters.
Hanna Vinahradava downed Masa Viriant, 6-2, 6-3, at the bottom of the lineup;
Nikol Mircheva finished off Schaefer, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4; and Zhao ended things with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bhakti Shah at the third position.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Coco Zhao, who now ranks fifth in program history with 86 wins, teamed up for a dominant doubles victory and then clinched the match for her team in singles.
