LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV's Yanina Sherwood has been named Mountain West Freshman of the Week, the conference announced today.
 
The 5-foot-11 freshman pitcher went 2-0 for the Rebels in the circle against Utah State en route to a 2-1 series win against the Aggies. The Mill Creek, Washington native had an ERA of 1.17 through 12.0 innings pitched and struck out eight Aggies through the weekend. Sherwood only allowed two earned runs, which happened in the series final run-rule victory. She held the Aggies to only a .233 batting average.
 
Sherwood got the start in game one on Friday, April 25 going the distance and pitched 7.0 shutout innings. She only allowed four hits, three walks and struck out seven Aggies on the day, which is only one strikeout away from tying her career high. She collected her second shutout of the season for her ninth complete game of the season.
 
In the rubber match on Saturday, April 26, she had her second start of the weekend. Sherwood pitched 5.0 innings allowing six hits, two earned runs and one walk. She picked up her 11th victory of the season, moving to an 11-7 overall record and collected her fourth MW win.
 
This is the first weekly honor for Sherwood.
 
The Rebels wrap up the regular season with a three-game home senior weekend series against New Mexico beginning on Thursday, May 1 and concluding on Saturday, May 3. UNLV will honor its four seniors: Karmyna Becerra, Ariana Martinez, Sofia Morales and Destinee Noury all weekend.
