Rebs Can't Close Out Colorado

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's tennis team won the doubles point and then at the top of the singles lineup vs. a Big 12 Conference opponent for the second consecutive outing – but ended up losing 4-3 in both cases as Colorado rallied past the home team on a sunny but chilly Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebels, who lost by the same score vs. Iowa State in its last match, fell to 3-2 while the Buffaloes improved to 6-2 and took a 7-6 all-time lead in the series.

UNLV has won the doubles point in every match this season and it was no different against CU. Hudson Hawkins and Nikol Mircheva won six straight games to claim a 6-2 victory over Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec at the top spot before Kaho Oyama and Sofiia Sokolvak clinched things with a 6-3 win over Anya Nelson and Lani Brotman on court three.

In singles play, Mircheva raced past Rixt van der Werff, 6-1, 6-3, at the second position and UNLV got its third point when Veronika Kliuch fought off El Sayed, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 1. However, the Buffs got victories on the other four courts to steal the road win.

REBEL OF THE MATCH: Mircheva won in doubles at the top of the lineup and then posted a quick straight-setter in singles to improve to 4-1 in duals.

UP NEXT: UNLV hosts Gonzaga on Sunday starting with doubles play at 10 a.m. Admission to all matches at Fertitta Tennis Complex is free of charge.
