Softball Takes First Trip Of Season To Play In ASU/GCU Invitational

UNLV heads to Arizona to play at Arizona State and Grand Canyon for next tournament

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team is taking the first road trip of the season to the desert next door to play in the ASU/GCU Invitational on Friday, Feb. 27 - Sunday, March 1. The Rebels will play five games through the weekend against one of the hosts No. 23 Arizona State, Eastern Illinois, UC Riverside and Wisconsin.

NEXT SERIES: The Rebels will be back on home turf to host the Red & Black Classic on Friday, March 6 - Sunday, March 8. UNLV will welcome LMU, North Dakota State and Utah Tech to Eller Media Stadium. The Scarlet & Gray will open the home tournament against Utah Tech on Friday, March 6 at 3 p.m. PT.
 
LAST TIME ON THE FIELD: UNLV closed out the UNLV Rebel Classic with a 4-1 record for the weekend. The Rebels earned wins over Valpo, a six-inning run-rule victory over Idaho State, an 8-0 shutout five-inning run rule win over Merrimack and another victory over Merrimack in the Rebel Classic finale. Lauren Fettic went 2-0 over the weekend for UNLV in the circle, while Yanina Sherwood and Amelia Weber each also collected a victory in the circle. For the weekend, Lyla Gonzalez led UNLV's offense with a .571 (8-for-14) which included two doubles and a triple. She also had six RBI through the Rebel Classic and crossed the plate four times. Additionally, Rachel Cook batted a .500 (7-for-14) with two doubles and her first home run of the season. She also had seven combined RBI. Charelle Aki led UNLV for the weekend in RBI with nine and five doubles.
 
REBELS' SQUAD: UNLV returns 10 letterwinners, including three position starters and two pitchers. All-Mountain West honorable mention Yanina Sherwood returns along with Charelle Aki, Gwyn Burnett, Mantha Hatzenbeller, Brooke Pisciotta, Maddie Scott, Diamond Sefe, Maggie Vasa, Amelia Weber and Bri Williams. The Rebels welcome 13 newcomers to the squad which include: freshmen Taryn Calderon, Lauren Fettic, Hailey Gilbertson, Lyla Gonzalez, Brooklyn Heil and Sophie Stockam; sophomores: Presley Barnes, Raegen Everett and Camryn Johnson; juniors: Rachel Cook and Emma Wardlaw; senior Keyannah Chavez and graduate student Natalie Turner.
 
UNLV brings back Charelle Aki, Bri Williams and Maddie Scott who were among the top seven hitters from last season. Aki batted a .311 with five doubles, three home runs and 19 RBI. Williams posted a .262 batting average with three doubles, four home runs and 15 RBI. Scott played all 49 games and started 43 and batted a .223 with five doubles, team-high three triples and 10 RBI.
 
LAST YEAR: The Rebels had an overall record of 24-25 and a 7-15 Mountain West record. Four Rebels collected All-Mountain West honors. Ariana Martinez picked up All-MW first team, Jesse Farrell was named All-MW second team and Karmyna Becerra and Yanina Sherwood earned All-MW honorable mention.
