LOGAN, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) – Hitting the road this weekend, UNLV women's tennis won its ninth straight match, 4-2 over Utah State on Friday at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club.
The Rebels improved to 12-2 and 5-0 in the Mountain West while the Aggies fell to 7-8 and 1-4 in the league.
UNLV was forced to rally after a rare loss of the doubles point.
Hudson Hawkins and
Nikol Mircheva downed Olivia Halvorsen and Terezia Mlkva, 6-0, at the top spot before the Aggies won the other two matches to take a 1-0 lead.
In singles play,
Veronika Kliuch got past Mlkva, 7-6, 6-4, at No. 1 to improve to 21-2 overall, including 14-0 in dual matches; Mircheva blitzed past Sabina Pintea, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2;
Sofiia Sokolvak fought off Magdal Nunez Pureco, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, on court six; and then reigning MW Freshman of the Week Eszter Kir-Czako won three straight games in the third set to come through with a 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 final over Maria Ramos Garcia on court four to end things.
REBEL OF THE MATCH: Nikol Mircheva teamed up for a shutout at the top of the doubles lineup and then rolled in singles play, losing only one game en route to improving to 10-2 in duals.
UP NEXT: UNLV heads to a showdown with No. 49 Boise State on Sunday starting with doubles play at 10 a.m.
