Yanina Sherwood has been named the final Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced today.
The 5-foot-11 sophomore pitcher went 1-0 with two saves in the three-game series against in-state rival UNR. Sherwood and the Rebels picked up another conference series sweep, which marked the fourth sweep of the season. The Mill Creek, Washington native pitched a combined 5.0 innings of relief and only allowed one hit. She struck out four combined and held UNR to only bat a .063 through her three appearances. Sherwood collected the win on Thursday, April 30 in relief after coming in during the top of the sixth inning against the Wolf Pack as the game was tied 3-all. The Scarlet & Gray took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, UNR was down to its final strike on an 0-2 count, and Sherwood caught the Wolf Pack batter swinging to secure the win. In game two, Sherwood took over in the top of the seventh inning. Sherwood and the Rebels retired the Wolf Pack in order for Sherwood's first save of the weekend. In the series finale, Sherwood came in relief in the top of the sixth inning as the Rebels were ahead by three-runs, 7-4. UNR tried to get a two-out rally going in the top of the seventh with a runner on third, but Sherwood struck out the final batter for the Rebels to complete the sweep of the Wolf Pack.
This marked the first weekly honor for Sherwood this season and the second for UNLV.
The Rebels will head to Reno for the MW Softball Championships beginning Wednesday, May 6. UNLV is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will have a first round bye. The Scarlet & Gray will begin play on Thursday, May 7 at 6 p.m. against the winner of No. 3 seed UNR and No. 6 seed Colorado State.
