LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — A pair of first half goals from sophomore forward
Maxim Scordo lifted UNLV men's soccer (1-0) to a 2-1 season-opening win Thursday night over CSUN (0-1) at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
In his first match as a Rebel, Scordo netted his first career brace with an 18th-minute goal assisted by seniors
Andres Robles and
Nick Legendre and a 23rd-minute penalty kick goal. CSUN made it onto the board with a second-half goal in the 79th minute from Dave-Ryan Tankou, but was held out of the net the remainder of the contest.
STAT OF THE GAME: The Scarlet & Gray backline kept the Matador attack in check, allowing just one shot on goal. In turn the Rebel attack did its part in giving UNLV's attack a 4-1 advantage over the visitors in shots on goal for the match.
QUOTABLE: "I think it was a great night. When you're at home you have to take advantage of those opportunities. It's still early in the non-conference season and we still have a lot of work to do. I thought we started really well, but I didn't think we finished as strong as I wanted. We could've been a little bit better with the ball in those later moments. But overall, I'm really pleased with the performance."
UP NEXT: The Scarlet & Gray will pack its bags for a four-game road swing that starts Tuesday, Aug. 25 at Kansas City .
NOTES:
- In spite of not being listed in the box score for an assist, junior defender Manolo Vazquez paved the way for Scordo's second goal by earning the penalty after being fouled during a corner kick.
- Scordo's goals gave him three career collegiate scores after notching one as a freshman in 2025 at Dayton.
- In their fifth year under head coach BJ Craig, the Rebels have now won back-to-back season openers on their home turf. They previously topped LMU in their 2025 season opener.
- Senior goalkeeper Hugo Lemos picked up the first win of the season in net. He and his senior counterpart in forward Bryce Allred played the full 90 minutes.
