CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The UNLV volleyball team earned second place after going 1-1 at the Carolina Classic at Carmichael Auditorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina, Saturday, to finish the tournament with a 2-2 mark. The Rebels lost to Cincinnati 3-2 in their first match of the day and defeated George Mason 3-0 in their final match.
Against Cincinnati, UNLV (7-3) lost 15-17, 9-15, 15-13, 15-9, 9-15 and was led by junior outside hitter Jeanette Graves who recorded a career-high 20 kills to lead all hitters. Three other Rebels had double-figures in kills and four had double-figures in digs led by sophomore defensive specialist Ana Ramos' 17.
Cincinnati (6-6) was led by freshman outside hitter Lisa Hissink's 18 kills and match-high 24 digs.
UNLV was out-hit .188 to .141 and out-dug 95-80 for the match.
UNLV led 14-11 in the first game, but Cincinnati rallied to tie it at 14-14 before eventually winning 17-15. In the second game, the Bearcats raced out to an 11-3 lead. UNLV cut the score to 12-9, but UC held on for the win scoring the final three points.
In the third, UNLV jumped out to an 11-2 start, but the Bearcats rallied to tie the game at 13-13 before the Rebels put it away. UNLV led 8-2 in the fourth game when Cincinnati cut the score to 8-6. UNLV then scored four-straight points and went on to win 15-9.
In the deciding rally-scoring fifth game, UNLV led 5-4 but Cincinnati outscored the Rebels11-4 the rest of the way to win the match.
Against George Mason (0-11), UNLV won 15-10, 15-8, 15-4. The Rebels were led by sophomore outside hitter, and UNLV's only all-tournament team member, Justine Kamelamela's match-high of 13 kills. Junior middle blocker Christel Eves added a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs.
The Patriots were led by sophomore outside hitter Altia Hibbert's 11 kills.
UNLV out-hit George Mason .286 to .172 and recorded 45 digs to the Patriot's 30.
UNLV jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first game, but George Mason fought back to cut the score to 11-10. The Rebels took control from there, scoring the game's final four points. In the second game, George Mason took a 5-0 lead on five-straight serves, but UNLV came back to outscore the Patriots 15-3 the rest of the way. UNLV scored nine unanswered points after leading 3-2 in the third game, eventually earning the win.
In Saturday's other action Idaho (7-4) defeated George Mason 3-0, North Carolina (11-3) def. Idaho 3-1 and North Carolina def. Cincinnati 3-0. North Carolina was a perfect 4-0 for the tournament, capturing the tournament's championship.
UNLV's next action will be on Monday, Sept. 21, at 7:00 p.m., as it hosts Utah State at Lied Gymnasium.
