CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The UNLV volleyball team went 1-1 during the first day of the Carolina Classic at Carmichael Auditorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina, Friday. The Rebels defeated Idaho 3-1, in their first match of the day and lost to North Carolina 3-0 in its second match.
Against Idaho, UNLV (6-2) was led by junior outside hitter Angie Sylvas' game-high of 18 kills as it defeated the Vandals 15-6, 15-12, 14-16, 15-11. The Rebels were assisted in the win by sophomore outside hitter Justine Kamelamela's 17 kills and junior middle blocker Christel Eves' career-high of 18 kills. Eves and junior middle blocker Danielle Gerlach led the team in digs with eight each.
Idaho (6-3) was led by freshman outside hitter Heather Kniss' double-double of 14 kills and 12 digs.
UNLV recorded 76 kills to Idaho's 57, while out-hitting the Vandals .240 to .191.
After 33 side-outs and the score tied at 6-6, UNLV rallied to score nine-straight points on sophomore defensive specialist Ana Ramos' serve to win the first game. Leading 13-10 in the second game, the Rebels let Idaho creep back into it at 13-12, as UNLV finished it with two more points.
UNLV trailed 13-8 in the third, as it fought its way back into the game and tied the score at 14-14, but Idaho scored the game's final two points. UNLV had a 9-6 advantage in the fourth game and increased it to 12-8, eventually winning it 15-11 and capturing the match.
Against North Carolina, UNLV lost 15-5, 16-14, 15-3. The Rebels were led by Kamelamela's 15 kills. Eves added 10, while Sylvas recorded a match-high 16 digs. Senior setter Meri-de Boyer had a double-double of 40 assists and 10 digs.
North Carolina (9-3) was led by senior outside hitter Alicia Alford's 14 kills.
The Tar Heels out-blocked the Rebels 11-1 and out-hit them .252 to .083.
Trailing 2-1 in the first game, North Carolina went on a 12-1 run and cruised to the 15-5 victory. UNLV held a 10-4 advantage in the second game, but North Carolina rallied to tie it at 11-11 and eventually win 16-14. In the third game it was all UNC as the Tar Heels scored seven-straight points at one time to win 15-3.
In Friday's other action Cincinnati (5-5) defeated George Mason (0-9) 3-1, North Carolina defeated George Mason 3-0 and Idaho defeated Cincinnati 3-2.
The classic will conclude Saturday with the Rebels facing Cincinnati at 12:00 p.m. EDT and George Mason at 5:00 p.m. EDT.
