PROVO, UTAH - UNLV softball fell to the BYU Cougars 7-6 and 4-3 in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Rebels finished this weekend's Mountain West road trip 1-3 and now have a 2-12 league record, 16-34 overall. Brigham Young improves to 4-10 in conference play and 12-21 overall.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Cougars used a 6-run 3rd inning to jump to a 6-0 lead. UNLV's Racheal Goodpaster, on her way to a 4 for 4 day at the plate, hit a lead off doubled in the 4th inning to start a familiar, almost habitual, rally. Geney Orris reached base on an error by the shortstop and co-captain Linda Garza knocked them both in with a RBI single.
The Rebels would pull to within two runs in the top of the 5th via a 2-run homer by Goodpaster and to within one in the top of the 7th on the "same play". The Rebel shortstop needs one homerun to tie the single-season homerun record (15) held by All-American Kim Rondina in 1995 and 1997. The Cougars would hold off the UNLV effort and hang on to the victory. In the nightcap, the Rebel bats were held in check by the Cougar pitching staff. UNLV manufactured runs through key hits, smart base running and capitalizing on BYU errors. Two of the three UNLV runs were direct consequences of Cougar mishaps.
Unfortunately, BYU was able to do the same to UNLV as they scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 5th through a Rebel miscue. BYU would go on to complete the sweep of UNLV.
UNLV will play their final game at the Rebel Diamond Thursday, April 27th in a doubleheader against San Diego State. The scheduled start time will be 1:00pm (PST).
