Volleyball Hosting Spring Fundraising Tournament

April 18, 2001

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV volleyball program is hosting an eight-team spring fundraising tournament on Saturday, April 21 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Games will be played at the North Gym on the UNLV campus. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students (12-18) and free for kids 11 and under.

Teams scheduled to compete include UNLV, Penn State, Arizona, Kansas State, Northern Arizona, Oregon State, Utah and Surf City (members of Golden West Community College).

Arizona and Penn State finished the 2000 season ranked No. 5 and No. 6 respectively in the USA Today/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25. Kansas State finished the season ranked No. 16, while Utah was No. 20.

Teams will compete for the first time under the NCAA's newly imposed scoring format, utilizing a best three-out-of-five rally scoring format to 30 points in games one through four and to 15 in the deciding fifth game, if needed. All games must still be won by two points.

To expedite game play this weekend, the UNLV tournament will play best two-out-of-three with the third game played to 15 points.

Other significant rule changes include allowing the let serve, allowing one toss per serve in eight seconds with no re-serve, not allowing serves between games, and requiring both teams to turn in lineups at the end of the final timed warm-up period on the court.

The NCAA passed the international pursuit rule as an experimental rule. A ball that has passed completely beyond the centerline outside the antenna may be retrieved if it is returned to that team's playing area outside of the antenna.
