LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's soccer team claimed its second consecutive shutout of the season after defeating Utah State, 2-0, Sunday afternoon to capture the UNLV/FILA Tournament title at Peter Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas.
With a scoreless first half, senior midfielder Anita Pedford found the first goal of the match in the 51st minute. In traffic, Pedford pocketed her shot into the left corner of the net off of her own rebound by the right side post, to give UNLV the 1-0 lead.
Freshman Jessika Vasquez, who sat out last season as a redshirt, later contributed the insurance goal at the 61:00 minute mark off a double assist in the 6-yard box from freshman Annii Magliulo and Pedford. This marked her first UNLV career goal.
With a 2-0 weekend, the Rebels improve to 4-3-2 overall, while the Aggies drop to 3-4-1. Senior goalkeeper Alice Gleason earned her third shutout of the year with three saves. UNLV outshot Utah State 22-6 making the Aggies' goalkeeper Tracy Brady work hard in net as she registered 10 saves.
The Rebels get back into gear on Tuesday, Oct. 2, as they host intrastate rival Nevada at 7:30 p.m.
