Women's Soccer Surrenders to SDSU in Overtime

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The UNLV women's soccer team fell to San Diego State, 2-1, in overtime Saturday afternoon in both team's regular season finale at the SDSU Sports Deck.

Three minutes into overtime, San Diego State's Kim Castellanos netted the game-winning golden goal off a rebounded shot by teammate Lisette Martinez to claim a Senior Day victory for the Aztecs.

Late in the first half, Castellanos also had the game's first goal at 43:01 on a header off a rightside cross from teammates Shawni Flint and Boo Tinling to take the 1-0 lead.

With minutes to spare on the game clock in the second half, the Rebels leveled the match in the 89th minute as freshman Nickie Olson (Las Vegas) scored off a rightside cross from senior co-captain Cosette Packer (Henderson, Nev.) to extend the game into overtime.

Freshman goalkeeper Jenna Huff (Huntington Beach, Calif.) made a career-high 11 saves on 24 shots by San Diego State, while Aztec goalkeeper Stephanie Pearson had two saves.

UNLV (10-7-1, 2-4 MWC) will once again face San Diego State (12-6, 3-3 MWC) in the quarterfinals of the 2002 Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championships to be held on Nov. 6-9 in Provo, Utah. The fifth-seeded Rebels will take on the fourth-seeded Aztecs on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. (MST).
