PROVO, Utah - A successful penalty kick in the final minute of regulation by junior Kim Castellanos sent fourth-seeded San Diego State past the fifth-seeded UNLV women's soccer team, 2-1, in the first round of the 2002 Mountain West Conference Championship held Wednesday night at South Field.
Both teams would remain scoreless in the first half, leading to the eventual second half scramble.
San Diego State's Shawni Flint opened scoring in the 60th minute on a header off a cross from teammate Erica Lopez to get the Aztecs on the board first. Sophomore midfielder Annii Magliulo (Pengrove, Calif.) later equalized the match at 61:44 off a goalie rebound in front of the net unassisted.
Castellanos, an all-conference first team selection, netted the game-winning goal at 88:38 to seal the deal for the Aztecs.
Freshman goalkeeper Jenna Huff (Huntington Beach, Calif.) made 10 saves on 16 shots by the Aztecs, while San Diego State's Stephanie Pearson had five saves on 15 shots by UNLV.
SDSU (13-6) keeps its undefeated all-time winning streak versus the Rebels intact at 6-0. Last week, the Aztecs topped UNLV in a 2-1 overtime victory in both team's regular season closer on Nov. 2.
The Rebels conclude the year with a 10-8-1 overall record, capturing their third consecutive winning season under UNLV coach Dan Abdalla.
San Diego State advances to league semifinal action tomorrow and will face top-seeded and defending conference champion BYU.
Tournament Notes...Sophomore Annii Magliulo was named to the 2002 MWC All-Tournament Team.
