Final Stats
WAIKOLOA, Hawaii - The last day was the hardest for the UNLV men's golf team and most of the rest of the field at the Taylor Made Waikoloa Intercollegiate on Friday.
The Rebels (297-288-303--888), although not the only team to card their highest score in Friday's final round, were unable to take advantage of an opportunity and finished the tournament in 14th place.
The individual numbers were similar to the team scores. Clark Corbett, after hanging around the top 20 for two rounds, slipped to 35th after a final-round 77 pushed him to five-over par.
Corbett was UNLV's top finisher, however. Ryan Moore, who turned the Rebels' best round of the tournament with a second-round 70 on Thursday, answered with a second four-over 76 in the finale. At six-over, Moore finished tied for 37th.
Sophomore Brandon Askew was the Rebels' most consistent player, shooting 75 on the heels of back-to-back 74s. At seven-over, he was three shots ahead of teammate Calvin Kupeyan, who carded a final-round 75.
Not figuring into the team scoring on Friday was Brien Davis, who shot 83.
Georgia Tech double dipped into the winning pot, capturing both the team and individual titles. Troy Matteson beat Fresno State's Nick Watney by a single stroke, and the Yellow Jackets held off Oklahoma by eight.
The Rebels will spend three days resting on the island before beginning play in their next tournament, the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Honolulu.
