LAS VEGAS - Boston College's Cara Blumfield drilled a long two-run homeroff the left-field scoreboard to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 victory over the UNLV softball team on Saturday at Eller Media Stadium.
The Eagles' (4-15) already led 1-0 following an unearned run in the fourth before Blumfield's long ball put the game out of the Rebels' (11-15) reach.
For emphasis, Eagle pitcher Tekae Melandris added a solo shot of her own in the sixth off Rebel reliever Kacey Ellis, and BC tacked on an unearned run in the final inning to cap its scoring.
UNLV's only offensive threat came in the bottom of the sixth when it collected three of its five hits on the night. However, a double play helped the Eagles quell any threat of scoring and preserved the shutout for Malandris (3-7).
Rebel starter Geney Orris (3-4) surrendered just four singles and the big home run, dropping her fourth decision of the year. Pauline Glenn pounded out three of the Rebels' five hits in a perfect 3-for-3 evening at the plate.
UNLV will close tournament play on Sunday when it hosts Notre Dame at 12:30 p.m.
