Volleyball Drops Opening Game Of Gameworks Classic

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV volleyball team (2-2) dropped its opening game of the Gameworks/UNLV Volleyball Classic to California 3-0 (30-22, 30-19, 30-23) on Friday night. The Rebels were out-hit .373 to .291 and committed ten service errors and were forced into 9 receptions error.

Junior transfer Tarin Keith led the Rebels with ten kills. She hit .261 (10-4-23) for the match and finished with two blocks. Blair Wilkes and Patricia Assuncao added seven kills each. Wilkes also dropped five blocks on the Bears.

Sophomore setter Nicki King served up 34 assists in the three-game match. She also added four digs and three block assists.

Shannon Chase, playing the newly implemented libero position, finished the game with a team-high eight digs.

Cal's Mia Jerkov led all players with 17 kills and 11 digs.

Ball State defeated Texas Tech 3-2 (30-27, 30-9, 30-24, 30-25, 15-11) in the opening game of the tournament.

Play continues in the 2002 Gameworks/UNLV Volleyball Classic on Saturday with Ball State taking on California at 1:30 p.m., followed by UNLV and Texas Tech at 4 p.m.
