BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UNLV men's golf team shot a final-round 277 as a team, but could not overtake Oklahoma State for the lead at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
The Rebels entered the final round just three strokes behind the Cowboys at the par-71, 6,958-yard Old Overton Course, but OSU carded a team 273 to win the event. Georgia, which began the day one shot ahead of the Rebels, shot 275 to finish second.
Rebel juniors Ryan Moore and Travis Whisman led the UNLV charge, shooting 64 and 66 respectively. Moore, who tallied 64 for the second time this fall, finished third individually at 12-under, six strokes behind Wake Forest's Bill Haas.
Whisman's 66 lowered his total to 10-under, good for a fifth-place tie.
Freshman Sam Hunt shot 73 and Ryan Keeney added a 74 to round out the Rebels' team effort. JC Deacon, who began the day in a tie for seventh place, slipped to one-under par with a disappointing 77 and finished 25th.
Keeney tied for 29th and Hunt finished 45th.
Among the nine teams the Rebels beat head-to-head were No. 2 Clemson, No. 5 Georgia Tech, No. 8 Augusta State and No. 9 Texas.
The Rebels will take three weeks off before making their fourth trip to the East of the fall to play in the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Nov. 7-8.
