Texter Next In Rebel Legacy

Nov. 12, 2003

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's golf team has received a signed national letter of intent from Jarred Texter, 17, of Millersville, Pa., UNLV head coach Dwaine Knight announced Wednesday.

Texter, ranked seventh nationally by Golfweek among all junior boys, was a two-sport star at Penn Manor High School, lettering in both golf and track. He was an honorable mention AJGA All-American last year and expected to earn the honor again this year.

"We're very excited that Jarred has decided to come play for UNLV," Knight said. "He's not only a great golfer and a great athlete, but also a good person. He unquestionably has a great future ahead of him, not only in college but also as a professional. He had a lot of great choices, and we're happy he chose to come here."

Among his golfing credits are victories at the 2002 U.S. Junior Amateur, of which he is a four-time qualifier, at the 2002 North/South Junior Championship at Pinehurst, and at the 2003 Lanco Amateur, where he shot a course-record 63 and won the event by eight strokes. He was also a member of the 2003 Canon Cup team.

An well-rounded athlete, Texter was also a sharpshooter for the Comets' basketball team, breaking a 15-year-old school record with 47 three-pointers last year.

Texter will enroll at UNLV and begin competing next fall.
