WAHIAWA, Hawaii - The UNLV men's golf team was one of 14 teams to break par in the first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Wednesday and currently sits in fourth place.

The Rebels carded a team round of 280, eight strokes under par at the par-72, 6,917-yard Leilehua Golf Course. They trail New Mexico, the first-round leader, by four shots.

Both team and individual scores were low all around. All but eight of the 22 teams broke the team par total of 288, and 55 of the 117 individuals completed the day's round in 72 strokes or less. Five players shared the individual lead at 67.

Leading the way for the Rebels were juniors Travis Whisman and Andres Gonzales, both of whom scored a three-under-par 69. They are among the 10 players tied for 13th place individually.

Junior All-American Ryan Moore trailed his teammates by just a single stroke after shooting 70.

An even par score from sophomore Ryan Keeney wrapped up the Rebels' team total at 280. JC Deacon, who sits in a tie for 56th place, did not count a respectable 73 toward the team score.

Second-round play is slated to begin at 7:30 a.m. HST.
