Rebels Split During First Day At Match Play

FORT WORTH, Texas - The UNLV men's golf team lost in the first round, then won in the second round (consolation bracket) during the first day of play Sunday at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship at Colonial Country Club.

Ninth-seeded Duke upset the eighth-seeded Rebels 3-1-1 during the first round of play, which moved UNLV into the consolation bracket where it defeated 16th-seeded Arizona later in the day 3-2.

Against Arizona to stay alive at the tournament, UNLV's three wins were turned in by Ryan Keeney (over Nathan Tyler, 2 and 1), C.J. Gatto (over Josh Esler, 2 and 1) and Jarred Texter (over Ben Fox, 4 and 3). UNLV's losses were from Matt Kinsinger (to Creighton Honeck, 1-up) and Blake Trimble (to Travis Esway, 2-up).

In UNLV's first-round loss to Duke, the Rebel losses were by Eddie Olson (to Clark Klaasen, 5 and 4), Gatto (to Michael Quagliano, 2 and 1) and Texter (to Michael Schachner, 2 and 1). Kinsinger halved Adam Long, while the Rebel victory was put up by Keeney (over Jake Grodzinsky, 4 and 2).

Top-seeded Florida advanced to the semifinals where it will meet fourth-seeded Oklahoma State. The winner will face the victor of seventh-seeded Texas A&M vs. 11th-seeded Lamar.

Florida survived its second close match of the day, downing Duke by tiebreaker in the second round. The Gators won 30 total holes to the Blue Devils' 28 to advance to the semifinals and will face Oklahoma State, a 4-1 winner over fifth-seeded Clemson. The Cowboys won big in their four matches, the closest being 4-2.

Lamar recorded its second upset of the day when it downed third-seeded UCLA, 3-2. Texas A&M won the final match of the winners bracket, beating second-seeded Georgia, 3-2. Texas A&M won two matches on the final hole in the darkness.

Four teams were eliminated in the consolation bracket - Arizona, 14th-seeded Auburn, 15th-seeded Minnesota and 13th-seeded NC State.

The tournament will run through Tuesday. UNLV will face Washington in the third round (consolation bracket).
