Final Stats
Fullerton, Calif. - The UNLV softball team (21-32) traveled to California Thursday to play the Cal State Fullerton Titans (29-20) in the squad's final regular season road games. The Rebels broke open a 3-3 tie to take game one 8-3, but dropped the nightcap 5-1. Maggie Livreri and Rosa Ordaz were the offensive weapons for UNLV as they collectectively tallied seven RBI.
In game one, the Rebels took a 2-0 lead after the first inning of play, but gave up three runs to the Titans in the second before tying the score at 3-3 in the third. The game remained tied at 3-3 until the top of the seventh when two errors on one play allowed the Rebels to take a 4-3 lead prior to the game being broken open on a grand slam by Livreri.
In the first inning, Brittany Bolinger hit a one-out bunt single to start the Rebel offensive. Livreri took her team-leading 28th walk of the season and moved Bolinger to second. Following the second out of the inning, Ordaz nailed a double to left center that allowed both runners to come home for an early 2-0 lead.
The Titans took their only lead of the game as they scored three runs on two hits. Christie Robinson (7-11) struck out the first batter of the inning, but a wild pitch allowed the hitter to reach first base safely. The next batter was then hit. After a fielder's choice ground out, Robinson gave up a three-run home run to Tiffany Hoff over the left field fence.
UNLV tied the score in the third with help from a Bolinger once again. With one out, Bolinger hit a triple to the left center gap and raced around the bases for the three-base hit. She wound up scoring her second of the game on a sacrifice fly hit by Livreri to left field.
After three scoreless innings of play, UNLV received help from CSF's defense to break open the contest. With one out, Caitlyn Paus hit a single to left field. Paus advanced to second on a ground out by Bri Bernardi. Lauren von Holst then came to the plate in a pinch-hitting role and took a walk. Brittany Freight then hit a chopper to the second baseman, which was misplayed. Paus overran third, but the throw by the second baseman to third was in the dirt and allowed her to score. After a single by Bolinger, Livreri came up with the bases loaded and added four insurance runs with a grand slam to left.
Robinson went the distance for the win, as she allowed three runs on six hits. She struck out two and walked none.
Marissa Marzan (10-7) took the loss for the Titans, as she gave up eight runs (three earned) on seven hits. She struck out seven Rebels, while walking two.
In game two, the affair went the way of the home squad. Fullerton took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the second and added two more in the fifth on back-to-back home runs, before UNLV finally got on the board in the seventh.
In the second inning, the Titans got two-run triple from Amanda Kamekona to score the first two runs of the game. The runners had reached base on a one-out single and a two-out walk. Kamekona came home on a wild pitch prior to the third out being recorded.
The Titans added to their lead with home runs by Kati Gollhardt and Ashley Van Boxmeer.
Candice Baker held the Rebel bats at bay until they registered the first hit off of her in the sixth (Freight) and then a solo home run in the seventh (Ordaz). Baker pitched the complete game and struck out 12 batters.
Becky McDonald (2-5) threw 6.0 innings and allowed five runs on six hits. She struck out two and walked two.
Up next for UNLV is a Mountain West Conference doubleheader in Las Vegas versus the San Diego State Aztecs. Saturday will be the Third Annual Strike Out Cancer Day at Eller Media Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 5 pm.
