UNLV Head Coach Mike Sanford Quotes9-22-07
ON THE PLAY OF THE OFFENSE, ESPECIALLY RB Frank Summers: We were a physical football team tonight. We ran the football tonight. Everybody has been asking me about the run game and I kept telling you that Frank Summers is going to show up and he did tonight. Frank Summers is a tremendous football player. We blocked well up front tonight.
Travis Dixon played a very good football game as far as managing the game. He managed the win, which was critical.
ON THE IMPORTANCE OF OPENING CONFERENCE PLAY WITH A WIN: A lot of people were asking me about how important this game was and I think this is a tremendous step. We are in the process of building this program into a contender to win championships. We are 1-0 in the conference right now but we are not done. We have a lot of work to do.
ON SNAPPING THE LOSING STREAK AGAINST UTAH: Everyone on this football team was not born when the last one happened. We beat them this year and that is the big thing. That is a big step for this football program.
ON THE PLAY OF THE DEFENSE: I just thought our defense was tremendous. I know we didn't play very well last week against Hawaii but our defense played very well against Wisconsin, played very well against Utah State and this is becoming a very good defense. You win games with your defense.
ON WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE: We have been so close on a lot of turnovers and I talked to the team about the fact that we had some interceptions we dropped and had balls on the ground that we did not get to. Tonight we did.
ON THE PYSICAL PLAY IN THE GAME: This is by far the most physical game we have played this year. The thing that was good about it was we played physical on both sides of the football. We dominated the line of scrimmage on offense and dominated the line of scrimmage on defense and that is why we won.
ON HOW SPECIAL THE WIN WAS TO HIM: This is the best win of my short head coaching career. I expect a lot more and we are going to build off this.
