TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 17 UNLV men's golf team finished up the second round of play with a 3-under-par 281 at the Arizona Intercollegiate on Tuesday morning after Monday's play was halted because of darkness, then shot a final-round 10-over 294 to finish in a tie for fourth place. The tournament was played at the par-71, 6,793-yard Arizona National Golf Club.
Pepperdine captured the team title at 3-over 855 after shooting a final-round 6-over 290. San Diego State was second at 6-over, followed by Tennessee at 10-over, while UNLV and East Tennessee State tied for fourth at 14-over 866.
Leading the way for UNLV was freshman Derek Ernst, who finished tied for ninth after shooting final-round 3-under 68 and finishing with an even-par total of 213. Tennessee's Chris Paisley shot a final-round 4-under 67 and finished the tournament at 12-under 201 to win by three shots.
Other Rebel final-round scores, overall relation to par and finish: sophomore Ji Moon (75, +3, T15th), freshman Colby Smith (75, +3, T15th), junior Eddie Olson (79, +11, T44th) and junior Brett Kanda (76, +12, T51st). Olson carded an ace on the 227-yard par-3 17th during the second round.
UNLV has now competed in five tournaments during the 2008-09 season and has finished in the top five in all of them. Next up for the Rebels will be the John Burns Intercollegiate in Wahiawa, Hawaii, Feb. 18-20.
