Final Stats
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The UNLV Rebels (8-3) scored runs in each of the first four innings and added two insurance runs in the seventh to claim a 7-4 win over the Cal Poly Mustangs (2-2) at the Cathedral City Classic held at Big League Dreams in Cathedral City, Calif. The Rebels got a strong pitching effort from Kylie Wagner (4-1) and two-RBI efforts by both Marissa Nichols and Alyssia De La Torre in the win.
Nichols began the game with a double to deep left that extended her hitting streak to 10 games. Nichols took third on a sacrifice bunt by De La Torre and managed to score on a wild pitch tossed by Trista Thomas (0-1).
UNLV added two more scores in the second on a two-run single by De La Torre. Thomas could not find the strike zone in the stanza and walked the first three batters she faced to load the bases. De La Torre stepped up and delivered a single to center to score Paige Emerson and Tara Bendt. After De La Torre's hit, Thomas was sent to play center field and Rebecca Patton was brought into pitch.
Cal Poly struck for two runs of its own in the bottom of the second. The Mustangs got two singles to put runners on and then a passed ball pushed both into scoring position. Nicole Lund then singled to center to bring in two scores.
The Rebels got one run back in the third when Briones smashed a solo home run to right.
The teams traded runs in the fourth. Jaci Hull opened up the inning with a triple to right and then was brought home by a single from Kendall Fearn. The Mustangs got an RBI-single from Nora Sobczak in the bottom half to put the score at 5-3 after four innings of play.
CP pulled within on with a tally in the sixth. Wagner gave up three straight singles to load the bases before plunking Anna Cahn to force in the Mustangs' fourth run.
The Rebels answered back with two insurance runs of their own in the seventh. UNLV got a walk and a single to put two on before a ground out moved both up 60-feet. Cahn was then inserted into the circle to face Nichols and immediately gave up a two-run single through the left side.
Wagner went the distance with her third complete game of the year. She was touched for four runs (three earned) on 11 hits. She fanned six and walked two.
Thomas suffered the loss in 1.0 inning of work. She allowed three runs on two hits, while walking five and striking out one.
Patton was touched for four runs on eight hits in 5.2 frames of relief. She struck out four and walked two.
The Rebels are back in action at 3:00 pm, when they face the Texas A&M Aggies at Big League Dreams.
