VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 11 UNLV men's golf team is in fifth place at 16-over-par 576 after the first two rounds of action at the 12-team Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which was played at Old Overton Golf Club (par 70, 7,204 yards) on Monday.
The Rebels' first-round score was 4-over 284, while their second-round total was 12-over 292. Texas holds the team lead and is the only squad under par with a 36-hole total of 11-under 549. The Longhorns shot rounds of 9-under 271 and 2-under 278. Clemson is second at 4-over 564, host Alabama is in third at 5-over, UAB is 15-over and in fourth place, while the Rebels round out the top five.
Clemson's Corbin Mills and Texas' Jordan Spieth are tied for the individual lead at 6-under 134. They both shot first rounds of 5-under 65 and second rounds of 1-under 69. UNLV senior Derek Ernst is tied for third with Texas' Dylan Frittelli, both one shot back at 5-under 135. Ernst's rounds were 70 and 65. While Frittelli shot 66 and 69. Ernst's first round consisted of three birdies and three bogeys, while his second round included an eagle, four birdies and a bogey.
Other UNLV players: freshman Carl Jonson is in 18th place at 3-over 143 (68-75), junior Kevin Penner is tied for 30th at 7-over 147 (72-75), sophomore Blake Biddle is tied for 45th at 11-over 151 (74-77) and sophomore Nicholas Maruri is tied for 58th at 18-over 158 (80-78). There are a total of 60 individuals.
