Rebels Quickly Conquer The Aztecs In Three Sets

Oct. 20, 2014

Box Score: UNLV 3, San Diego State 0

SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team finished off its spell of three road matches in five days the only way it knew how with a 3-0 triumph over the San Diego Aztecs Monday night at Aztec Court. The victory - a program-best 14th in sweeping fashion - extended the Rebels winning streak to five matches, including the last four in straight sets.

With the win, the Scarlet & Gray improved to 18-5 on the year and 6-2 in Mountain West play. The Aztecs, on the other hand, saw its overall mark move to 8-10 and 4-4 in the league.

The Rebels outhit SDSU .210 to .088 primarily due to committing 17 fewer errors (12-29) despite the home side holding advantages in kills (41-38) and attacks (137-124). Both teams unleashed their best hitting efforts in the opening set with UNLV cranking out a .310 effort (15-2-23) to a .178 (15-7-45) for the Aztecs. Neither was able to continue with a hot hand in the second stanza with the visitors following up with a .079 (10-7-38) to the home side's paltry -.048 (10-12-42). The squads turned things around in the third with UNLV hitting .227 (13-3-44) to SDSU's .120 (16-10-50).

"I'm so proud of this team," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "There is absolutely no quit in this group. We won every long rally and controlled the net, which were key elements tonight. SDSU is so tough, and to get a sweep here was huge."

Bree Hammel was instrumental for the Rebels on both sides of the net with match highs in total blocks (six) and hitting efficiency (.471). Hammel's offensive display was helped by a team-high tying nine kills against one error off 17 swings. She chipped in two digs, as well.

Alyssa Wing tied Hammel's output in kills with nine of her own, while hitting .231. Wing also had three assisted blocks.

Katlin Winters was another member on the winning side to perform well around the net. Winters had eight kills off .286 hitting to go along with four assisted blocks and one dig.

Alexis Patterson, who had four kills and one assisted block, came close to a double-double with 27 assists and nine digs.

Allison Davies and Daryn Glenn loomed large on the back row for the Rebels with 18 and 14 digs, respectively. The former registered one assist and one ace to the latter's five kills and two assisted blocks.

SDSU got double-digit kill displays from Alexis Cage (11) and Kaja Sandberg (10). The Aztecs were also led by match-highs in assists by Courtney Eckenrode with 39 and in digs by Alexa Saba with 19.

UNLV closes out its 10-day road excursion with a return engagement against the Fresno State Bulldogs Saturday at 4:00 pm at the Save Mart Center. The Rebels and Bulldogs met in Las Vegas on Sept. 25, in a contest the Scarlet & Gray won by a 3-0 margin. The match will be streamed live in conjunction with the Mountain West Network and a link will be made available at UNLVRebels.com.
