FRESNO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV cross country team finished ninth overall with a team score of 245 at the 2014 Mountain West Championships held at Woodward Park. Spencer Moore was the top finisher for the Rebels in the 6K race with a final time of 21:27.90, which was the 26th best on the day.
The 10th-ranked New Mexico Lobos claimed their seventh straight women's title with all five of their scoring runners finishing between fourth and 10th place. The Lobos had a combined time of 1:43:08.50 and a team score of 33.
Boise State's Emma Bates and Marissa Howard finished first (19:37.30) and second (19:53.40), respectively. It's Bates won last year's meet, as well. As a team, the #23 Broncos took second with a time of 1:43:11.60 and a team score of 58.
Nikki Regalado was the second Rebel to cross the finish line with a time of 22:13.70 and in 45th. Vannessa Martinez (53rd/22:21.70), Rebecca Hobby (59th/22:28.50) and Miranda Menzies (84th/24:15.30) rounded out UNLV's scorers. Amanda Berg (85th/24:19.30) and Lindy Eskin (86th/24:23.80) also ran in the league meet for the Scarlet & Gray.
"I am proud of our team," said UNLV cross country head coach Jebreh Harris. "We have progressed from where we were last year. To a point, it's not so much about the placing and end result, but how they had each other's back. We came into this championship with the mindset of unity and "next woman up." We were without three other strong runners and our Rebels, once again, stepped up to the challenge and committed to the race. Spencer Moore was our top finisher and placed as one of the top-three true freshmen in our conference and that is totally commendable on all accords. We have a good core group of young women and I'm excited about our future. We have the NCAA West Regionals in two weeks, so now we must focus on our next competition."
The Wyoming Cowgirls finished third with a team score of 79 (1:45:16.11) and they were followed by Colorado State (103/1:46:34.40), Air Force (141/1:48:12.70), Nevada, Reno (163/1:48:45.70), Utah State (180/1:49:44.80) and Fresno State (225/1:51:52.80) in fourth through eighth place. San Diego State (276/1:53:05.80) and San Jose State (295/1:53:56.30) rounded out the 11-team contingent.
On the men's side, BSU's David Elliott won the individual title with a time of 23:38.70 and New Mexico notched its sixth consecutive team title with a team score of 26 (1:58:55.00).
