Rebels Host Cancer Awareness Matches Next Week LARAMIE, Wyo. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback to the Wyoming Cowgirls at the UniWyo Sports Complex Saturday afternoon. The loss - the second straight for the Rebels - by set scores of 25-22, 25-17, 25-19 moved the Scarlet & Gray's overall record to 13-5 and 1-2 in the Mountain West, while the Cowgirls improved to 13-4 and 2-2, respectively.
Wyoming outhit UNLV .336 to .188 in the affair behind a differential of 19 kills and a small edge in attack attempts (110-101). Both squads came out firing in the opening stanza with the hosts putting up a .419 effort to the visitors' .349 output. The only difference between the two teams was that UW had three more kills (20-17), while each committed two errors in 43 swings.
The statistics for the second and third frames leaned heavily in the Cowgirls' favor with eight-kill advantages in both sets two (14-6) and three (17-9). With the assistance of those extra kills, they hit .296 and .275 in the second and third, respectively. UNLV, on the other hand, was only able to hit .000 in the second and .121 in the third.
UNLV was paced offensively by eight kills from Bree Hammel, who hit .357 with three errors in 14 swings. Hammel also added three digs, three assisted blocks and one assist.
Daryn Glenn and Alexis Patterson followed closely behind Hammel's output with seven and six kills of their own, respectively. The former added a team-high eight digs and one assisted block to the latter's team-best 22 assists, six digs and two assisted blocks. Patterson's .455 hitting average was the best for the Rebels in the match.
"Our passing struggled today, which hurt our offense," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "We couldn't run our middles or right sides, which put two (defenders) up every time on our outsides. Wyoming passed well and ran in system most of the time, so our defense had a tough time, too. We'll get back in the gym and work hard this week."
The Cowgirls' Courtney Chacon racked up the contests only double-double with a partnering of 41 assists and 10 digs. Chacon also notched three kills and one ace.
Laura Beach (12 kills), Bridget Shanahan (11) and Erin Kriby (10) reached double figures in kills for UW with a pair of them (Beach and Kirby) hitting .444 or better.
UNLV returns to action next week with two matches dedicated to breast cancer awareness. The Rebels will host Air Force on Oct. 9 at 6:00 pm on an evening billed as "Victory for Victoria Night." Two days later, they'll host "Block Out Cancer Night" against New Mexico with first serve also set for 6:00 pm. Both contests will be streamed live in conjunction with the Mountain West Network.
