Rebels Rally To Topple #7 Rams

Nov. 1, 2014

Box Score: UNLV 3, #7 Colorado State 1

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team defeated the #7 Colorado State Rams in come-from-behind fashion Saturday night at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels, who trailed after the first set of action, rallied to win the three subsequent stanzas en route to a 3-1 triumph (20-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-17) and their first victory over a top-10 opponent in program history.

Prior to Saturday's match, the Scarlet & Gray had not beaten a ranked opponent since it - coincidentally - knocked off CSU in four sets when it was ranked 13th in the nation, on Oct. 16, 2008. UNLV's biggest win to-date had been a 3-0 sweep of the #12 BYU Cougars on Sept. 13, 2007 in Las Vegas.

With the win, the Rebels improved to 20-6 on the year and slid back into second place in the Mountain West with an 8-3 mark. The loss did not hinder CSU's position in the MW, as it stays atop the standings with an 11-1 record and a 23-2 overall showing. The defeat snapped the Rams' 18-match winning streak and their string of 27 straight victories in "true" road matches that dated back to Oct. 25, 2012.

UNLV outhit CSU by nearly 86 points (.220 to .144) despite a slight disadvantage in kills (51-55) and a staggering disparity in attack attempts (141-167). However, that last figure did not affect the outcome as the Rams committed 11 more errors in those 26 swings. The Rams entered the week with the sixth-best hitting efficiency in the country with a .295 average.

The Rebels were able to minimize their errors with no more than six in any given set compared to seven or more in three of the four frames for the Rams, who tallied 10 or more twice. UNLV hit .219 or better in the first three stanzas, including a team-best .323 in the second. CSU, on the other hand, opened up with a .353 average before a .000 followed in set two. The visitors from Fort Collins came out of intermission hitting .213, but were held to only a .044 clip in the fourth and final set.

"Words can hardly describe how proud I am of this team," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "We had an amazing team performance with outstanding focus tonight. Daryn (Glenn) and Alyssa (Wing) played such solid defense and Katlin's (Winters) performance at the net was remarkable. Alexis (Patterson) moved the ball around so well and that made a big difference. Carly (Riehl) did a great job in the libero role and her play in the back row was commendable. CSU is such a good team and that makes this win so special. I'm so happy for our seniors who worked hard and believed in us and each other."

Katlin Winters and Alyssa Wing racked up double-doubles in the win. The former, who registered a match-best .632 hitting efficiency, combined 12 kills with a match-high 10 total blocks (two solo), while the latter used team highs in kills (13) and digs (17 - career high).

Daryn Glenn threw down eight kills, but loomed much larger defensively with a team-best 19 digs. She also added two assists, one ace and one assisted block.

Bree Hammel was also a force on both sides of the net with a .400 hitting display and eight kills to go along with five total blocks (two solo).

Alexis Patterson dished out 39 assists and chipped in seven digs, five kills and four assisted blocks.

Besides Glenn's and Wing's double-digit dig output, UNLV got 14 more from Carly Riehl to give the squad three players with 10 or more.

CSU was paced by Jasmine Hanna and her match-high 23 kills off a staggering 47 swings. Hanna was joined in kill double figures by teammates Adrianna Culbert and Marlee Reynolds, who had 10 apiece. Reynolds led the Rams in total blocks with four (one solo), while Deedra Foss and Jaime Colaizzi had match highs in assists (48) and digs (21), respectively.

The Rebels head back out on the road with trips to New Mexico and Air Force next week. They open up play in Albuquerque, N.M., against the Lobos Thursday, Nov. 6 (7:00 pm MT/6:00 pm PT). After that, they'll mosey north to Colorado Springs to face the Falcons two days later on Nov. 8 (6:00 pm MT/5:00 pm PT).
