Nov. 18, 2014

2014 UNLV Volleyball Weekly Notes - Week Thirteen

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels carry a five-match winning streak - their fourth such stretch of at least five consecutive victories this year - into the 13th week of the 2014 season. UNLV will square off against two opponents - Utah State and Boise State - that it will only play once in 2014. The Rebels open play in Logan, Utah against the Utah State Aggies in an affair that is slated to follow a men's basketball game (USU vs. Santa Clara) and starts at 8:30 pm MT (7:30 pm PT). The Scarlet & Gray return to Las Vegas three days later for a Saturday night tilt with the Boise State Broncos that has first serve set for 6:00 pm.

ON THE SIDELINES: The UNLV Rebels close out the 2014 regular season at home Tuesday, Nov. 25, against the San Diego State Aztecs. The evening has been deemed "Senior Night" and UNLV's four seniors - Allison Davies, Daryn Glenn, Katlin Winters and Jayme Jacinto - will be recognized prior to first serve.

UPCOMING PROMOTIONS:
Tuesday, Nov. 25: Senior Night & $2 Tuesday
-Fans can purchase discounted $2 tickets online and in advance of the match.
-Fans can purchase $2 hot dogs and soda prior to and during the match.

ONE WIN CHANGES EVERYTHING: The UNLV Rebels have three matches left in the 2014 regular season, and they own a 24-6 overall record and a 12-3 mark in Mountain West play. Both of those figures are tied for the most in the program's history with the 2007 squad's output of 24 and 12, respectively, from seven years ago. With one more victory, this year's edition will surpass its predecessor and set a new benchmark for each category.

Not only will the next triumph alter the program's single-season record book, but it will be the 500th "W" for head coach Cindy Fredrick, who is in the midst of her 28th year as an NCAA head coach. Fredrick began her career at Weber State in 1985 and has recorded 499 wins with four more stops along the way at Washington State, Iowa, Luther College and UNLV.

At the start of the 2014 campaign, Fredrick was 33rd on the active coaches' list with 475 tallies. All of those ahead of her have already eclipsed the 500 milestone.

REWRITING ONE RECORD AFTER ANOTHER: Besides the aforementioned overall and conference win totals, the UNLV Rebels have rewritten four single-season win records.
-Most Road Wins: nine (surpassed the eight won in 1998)
-Longest Road Winning Streak: six & current (surpassed the five won in 1978-79)
-Most Conference Road Wins: six (surpassed the five in 2005 & '07)
-Longest Conference Winning Streak: six & current (surpassed the four in 2007)

24 & UP CLUB: As of Sunday, Nov. 16, the UNLV Rebels were one of 18 volleyball programs in NCAA Division I to have cracked the 24-win barrier. UNLV, who sits at 24-6 on the year, and #9 Colorado State (26-2) are the only Mountain West squads to earn passage into the small, but highly distinguished club.

Western Kentucky (27-5) - a team that UNLV swept in Las Vegas the opening week of the season - and Towson (27-4) lead the way with 27 victories. Top-ranked Stanford (26-0), #4 Penn State (26-3), #9 CSU, Dayton (26-5) and Hofstra (26-5) follow closely behind with 26 wins.

The remaining squads with either 25 or 24 triumphs are #5 Washington (25-2), Arkansas-Little Rock (25-4), Seton Hall (25-6) and North Dakota (25-8), #2 Wisconsin (24-2), #8 Florida State (24-2), American (24-6), UMKC (24-5), Denver (24-6) and Valparaiso (24-7).

In all, the Rebels have played to a 3-2 record in five matches against four of the 17 teams in the exclusive club. UNLV split its two outings against CSU and also defeated WKU and SHU, while it lost to Washington.

MATCHING UP AGAINST THE BEST: The UNLV Rebels own an RPI of 61 as of Sunday, Nov. 16. UNLV dropped six spots - was 55th - in the rankings after home victories against Nevada, Reno and San José State.

The Rebels have played to a 5-6 record in 11 matches against seven foes that are in the top 100 of Monday's RPI release. They split their two meetings against Colorado State, who is 12th in rankings behind a 26-2 record, and notched two wins over #63 New Mexico (18-110) and one apiece over #42 Western Kentucky (27-5) and #57 Seton Hall (25-6). They suffered a pair of losses to both #37 CSUN (16-8) and #62 Wyoming (21-7) and another to #4 Washington (25-2).

The Scarlet & Gray has been perfect in all 19 contests it has played against teams 108th (San Diego State) and higher.
