2014 UNLV Volleyball Weekly Notes - Week Eleven

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels, who are coming off a four-set, come-from-behind win over then-#7 Colorado State, head back out on the road for a two-match swing through the Mountain Time Zone. UNLV will open up the trip with a Thursday night affair at 7:00 pm (6:00 pm PT) against the New Mexico Lobos. Two days later, the Rebels will have a Saturday showdown at 6:00 pm (5:00 pm PT) against the Air Force Falcons at the USAF Academy.

In early October, AF and UNM made stops in Las Vegas, but came away empty-handed after the Rebels dispatched the pair in four and three sets, respectively.

IT CAN NOW BE SAID: Dating back to the 1996 season and a total of 18 years, the UNLV Rebels had never registered a victory (0-22) over a top-10 opponent, but all of that changed last Saturday night at the Cox Pavilion against then-#7 Colorado State.

The Rams sauntered into Las Vegas winners of 18 straight matches and on the winning side of their last 27 "true" road affairs. The visitors from Fort Collins jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, but watched UNLV claw back with wins in the three subsequent sets.

The victory surpassed the 2007 triumph over #12 BYU on Sept. 13, 2007 as the biggest in program history and it was the first over a ranked opponent since a four-set win over #13 CSU on Oct. 16, 2008.

20 & UP CLUB: The UNLV Rebels are one of 24 volleyball programs in NCAA Division I to have cracked the 20-win barrier. UNLV, who sits at 20-6 on the year, and #10 Colorado State (23-2) are the only Mountain West squads to earn passage into the small, but highly distinguished club.

CSU, #2 Washington (23-0), #3 Florida State (23-0), Dayton (23-5), Towson (23-4) and Western Kentucky (23-5) - a team that UNLV swept in Las Vegas the opening week of the season - all have 23 victories.

Besides CSU, UNLV has squared off against two more from the list with a loss to Washington and a win over Seton Hall (22-6).

The remaining teams with 20 or more wins are: #1 Stanford (22-0), #6 Penn State (22-3), Liberty (22-6), Hofstra (22-4), Arkansas-Little Rock (21-4), UT-Arlington (21-6), UMKC (21-4), Denver (21-5), Valparaiso (21-6), North Dakota (21-8), #4 Wisconsin (20-2), #22 Kansas State (20-3), Rice (20-6), American (20-5), Murray State (20-4) and Marist (20-4).

MATCHING UP AGAINST THE BEST: The UNLV Rebels own an RPI of 57 as of this past Monday, Oct. 3. UNLV jumped six spots - was 63rd - in the rankings after its split last week's action at home against Wyoming and then-#7 Colorado State.

The Rebels have already played 10 matches against foes that are in the top 100 of Monday's RPI release. They split their two meetings against Colorado State, who is 13th in rankings behind a 23-2 record, and notched wins over #44 Western Kentucky (19-6), #63 Seton Hall (22-6) and #73 New Mexico (16-9). They suffered a pair of losses to both #36 CSUN (14-7) and #55 Wyoming (19-6) and another to #4 Washington (23-0).

The Scarlet & Gray has been perfect in all 17 contests it has played against teams 108th (San Diego State) and higher.
