Rebels In Third Place At MW Championship

TUCSON, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's golf team shot a second-round 11-over-par 295 on Saturday and is in third place at the 2014 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship, which is being played at the Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Resort (par 71, 7,144 yards).

The Rebels' 36-hole total is 7-over 575 and they trail defending champion and team-leading No. 23 New Mexico by 15 shots as the Lobos are 8-under 560 for the tournament after a second-round score of 3-under 281. UNM led by one stroke after Friday's first round. San Diego State is now in second at 1-over, while Air Force is fourth at 14-over, followed by Nevada, Reno and Colorado State, which are tied for fifth at 18-over. Wyoming and Utah State are tied for seventh at 25-over, Boise State and San José State are tied for ninth at 32-over, while Fresno State is 11th at 38-over.

New Mexico was the only team to shoot under par on day two despite windy conditions in the morning and rain in the afternoon. All 11 MW schools are represented in the field, which is made up of 55 individuals.

New Mexico's Gavin Green shot a second-round 2-under 69, San Diego State's Riccardo Michelini was at even-par 71 and New Mexico's Victor Perez also shot 2-under 69, as all three are in a tie for the individual lead at 3-under 139. Green carded a birdie on every par-five hole during the second round, while Perez tied for the most birdies in the second round with five. Air Force's Kyle Westmoreland is fourth, one shot back, at 2-under.

UNLV junior Carl Jonson, who held the individual lead by two strokes after the first round, shot 5-over 76 on Saturday and is tied for sixth at even-par 142. Sophomore AJ McInerney is tied for eighth at 1-over after a second-round 2-under 69, junior Nicholas Maruri is tied for 19th at 4-over after a second-round 75, and junior Kurt Kitayama and sophomore Zane Thomasare both tied for 24th at 6-over after shooting 78 and 75, respectively.

The tournament is an opportunity for the Rebels to earn three more points in the Governor's Series, presented by NV Energy. The competition between UNLV and Nevada, Reno is in its second year and is a head-to-head athletic and academic challenge between the longtime rivals. UNLV won the inaugural series 37.5-10.5.
