LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (13-9 overall, 6-4 Mountain West) maintained its winning ways over the Utah State Aggies with its fourth straight victory in the head-to-head series Thursday night at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels claimed the match behind set scores of 25-15, 22-25, 25-19, 25-17.
With the win, the Scarlet & Gray ran its home winning streak to 11 in a row dating back to the 2014 finale â€" a 3-1 triumph over San Diego State. The program record for consecutive home victories is 12 with a tussle against the Boise State Broncos looming Saturday night at 5:00 pm.
The Rebels outhit the Aggies by 121 points (.253 to .132) with help from advantages in kills (58-44) and errors (21-25), while only attempting two more swings (146-144). UNLV jumped out of the gate with a .444 hitting efficiency with 14 kills against two errors in 27 attempts. However, the hosts immediately followed that dazzling display with a paltry .061 effort (11-9-33). Things turned around in the third with a .171 showing (14-7-41) before a .356 (19-3-45) closed out the bout. USU, on the other hand, stayed within a range of .114 (second set) and .163 (fourth) and a pair of .121 averages in the odd numbered stanzas.
Bree Hammel and Ceannia Kincade paced the Rebel offense with their double-digit kill outputs. The former registered a match-high 19 off a .385 hitting efficiency and also added five digs and one assisted block, while the latter chipped in six digs, two assists, one ace and one assisted block.
Alexis Patterson dished out a match-high 45 assists to go along with six digs, five assisted blocks and four kills.
Carly Riehl and Alyssa Wing led the squad defensively with their 21 and 16 digs, respectively, while also helping out on the offensive end. Riehl aced one serve and assisted on three kills, while Wing had six kills, two assists, two aces.
UNLV had 8.5 total team blocks with Ashley Owens involved in six of those (one solo and five assisted).
"Bree played so well tonight, and got some great kills at crucial times," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "When the passes are there, Aleixs can run a lot of sets, but when our passing struggles our offense does, too. Carly and Alyssa played solid defense tonight, and I liked the back row attacks by Sadie and Ceannia."
The Aggies' Hannah Gleason had a match-best 23 digs, while her teammates Kaylie Kamalu and Erica Moscoso led their side in kills (17) and assists (40).
Fans with a ticket stub from the UNLV-Boise State football game Saturday afternoon will receive free admission to the volleyball match that evening. In addition, the first 100 kids in Halloween costumes will receive a free pumpkin backpack and have a chance to lineup with the Rebels during the player introductions.
