Rebels Rally Past Aggies In Five-Setter

LOGAN, Utah (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (9-6 overall, 2-1 Mountain West) recorded a 3-2, come-from-behind victory over the Utah State Aggies (4-14, 0-4 MW) at Kirby Court inside the Wayne Estes Center Saturday. The Rebels, who improved to 2-1 in five-set matches with the win, fell behind by one set twice in the contest only to rally and claim the bout behind set scores of 20-25, 25-13, 25-27, 25-14, 15-9.

The Scarlet & Gray was led by a quartet of players that registered a double-double apiece. Three of the four â€" Ceannia Kincade, Sadie Stutzman and Alyssa Wing â€" paired kills with digs, while Alexis Patterson combined assists and digs for the feat.

Stutzman hit .361 in the affair and paced all offensive players with a match- and career-high 17 kills to go along with personal-bests in attack attempts (36), assists (three) and digs.

Kincade threw down 15 kills behind a .308 hitting efficiency. She also added three assists offensively, while she notched 12 digs and a career-high tying seven total blocks (all assisted).

Wing, like Stutzman, contributed from all areas of the court with 14 kills, 13 digs, three assists, three assisted blocks and two aces.

Not only did Patterson guide the Rebel offense with 52 assists, but also she was directly responsible for eight of the team's kills â€" a career-high haul â€" off a match-best .545 average. She also chipped in 14 digs.

In addition to the double-digit dig tallies by the foursome with double-doubles, UNLV got a team-high 16 digs from Carly Riehl, who dished out a career-best six assists.

The Rebels outhit the Aggies by 123 points (.250 to .127) with help from advantages in kills (70-57), errors (27-31) and attacks (172-166). UNLV's offense combined to commit 10 errors in the three sets it won with hitting efficiencies of .500, .324 and .333 in the second, fourth and fifth, respectively, compared to 17 in the two stanzas â€" first (.194) and third (.091) â€" it lost.

"We were a Jekyll and Hyde team today; very up and down offensively," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "When we were good, we were very good. Sadie had a great match, and was followed closely behind by Ceannia and Alyssa offensively. Defensively, Carly led a very strong performance by the entire team."

USU, on the other hand, topped out with its best hitting display with a .281 effort in the first set and a .180 in the third; however, its offense could only muster .000, .026 and .118 in the three subsequent frames.

Kaylie Kamalu was the only Aggie to reach double figures in kills with a team-high 14. Erica Moscoso and Kassidy Johnson shared the setting duties for USU and assisted on 22 and 21 kills, respectively. In the back row, Hannah Gleason had a match-high 23 digs.

NOTES: The win is the first in a "true" road match for UNLV this season, who improved to 1-3 in those contests, and only its second away from the Cox Pavilion (3-0 win vs. Texas Southern on Sept. 19) … The last time UNLV had four players record double-doubles in the same match was against Colorado State on Nov. 12, 2006 when Maria Aladjova (15 kills/15 digs), Kristin Koochi (26 assists/14 digs), Brittani Lumsden (15 kills/10 digs) and Melody Nua (35 assists/10 digs) did so … Coincidentally, three (Aladjova, Lumsden and Nua) of the aforementioned foursome also accomplished the feat with Michelle Banks against Cal Poly on Aug. 25, 2006 earlier that season … The last time UNLV had five players record 10 or more digs in the same match was earlier this season against California on Sept. 4 … The team's 70 kills, 172 attempts and 67 assists are season highs in those three categories this season.
