LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (15-13 overall, 8-8 Mountain West) lost in four sets to the #13 Colorado State Rams (23-3, 16-0 MW) Wednesday night in the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels fell behind after the first set, but evened the score at 1-all with a win in the second frame. Unfortunately, the visitors from Fort Collins claimed the third and fourth en route to the victory behind set scores of 25-18, 23-25, 25-19, 25-15.
By virtue of the win, CSU laid claim to the 2015 Conference championship -- its seventh straight title dating back to the 2009 campaign.
UNLV was paced by a double-double from Alexis Patterson, who paired 29 assists and 14 digs for the feat. The setter also provided two kills and two assisted blocks.
"We played some good volleyball tonight, but had some unforced errors that were critical," said head coach Cindy Fredrick.
Ashley Owens led all Rebels in kills with eight, while Ceannia Kincade followed closely behind with seven. The former also chipped in a match-high six blocks (all assisted) to the latter's contribution of five digs, three assisted blocks, one assist and one ace.
In addition to Patterson's 14 digs, the Scarlet & Gray got 23 more from Carly Riehl, which tied for the match high.
UNLV's block kept it in the bout with a 13.0 to 10.0 advantage. Owens and Elsa Descamps factored in 11 of the squads 13 putbacks. Descamps had five (one solo).
The Rams outhit the Rebels by 147 points (.189 to .042) with help from an advantage of 24 kills in 17 more attack attempts (159-142). CSU topped out with a .371 efficiency in the opening stanza before it followed up with its lowest output -- a paltry -.043 effort -- in the second before .231 and .256 efforts in the third and fourth, respectively. UNLV could only muster four averages below .100 with its best also taking place in the first (.083).
CSU got double-doubles from Adrianna Culbert (12 kills/26 assists), Alex Reid (12 kills/12 digs) and Crystal Young (25 assists/13 digs). Acacia Andrews also provided 11 kills, while Jaime Colaizzi led the squad with 23 digs.
UNLV hits the road for the final time this season with a jaunt to Laramie, Wyo., Saturday. First serve betwee the Rebels and Cowgirls at the UniWyo Sports Complex is set for 1:00 pm MT (12:00 pm PT).
NOTES: With assistance of her 23 digs, Riehl moved into ninth place in the program's record book with 858; she is 20 behind Kela Lau Hee (2007-10) for seventh.
