Nov. 4, 2015 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV student-athletes graduated at an even higher rate this year as the NCAA released its most recent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) on Wednesday.
UNLV's GSR for student-athletes in 2014-15 was 78 percent and its four-class average FGR for student-athletes was 62 percent. The latest data show an increase of two percentage points in both statistics compared to last year (GSR in 2013-14 was 76 percent, while FGR was 60 percent). The 62-percent, four-class average FGR for student-athletes remains 21 percentage points higher than the general student population at UNLV.
In 2014-15, 50 percent of UNLV student-athletes achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater and 179 student-athletes were named to the Dean's Honor List (requires a semester grade point average of 3.5 or greater) for Fall 2014 and Spring 2015. In addition, more than 80 UNLV student-athletes earned their degrees in 2014-15, while all 17 athletic programs earned a multiyear APR that exceeded the required minimum of 930.
"Everyone here is committed to both the academic and athletic success of our student-athletes and it's wonderful to see that success demonstrated in these numbers," said UNLV Athletics Director Tina Kunzer-Murphy. "Nothing makes us prouder than graduating our student-athletes and we continue to do so with increasing frequency here at UNLV behind the great work put in by our academic support team."
FGR assesses first-time, full-time freshmen in a given group and only counts them as academic successes if they graduate from their institution of initial enrollment within a six-year period. It makes no accommodation for transfers into or out of an institution. It is, however, the only measure that allows a direct comparison between student-athletes and the general student body.
GSR begins with the Federal unit, and adds transfer students, mid-year enrollees and non-scholarship students (in specified cases) to the sample. Student-athletes who leave an institution while in good academic standing before exhausting athletics eligibility are removed from the unit of their initial institution. This rate provides a more complete and accurate look at actual student-athlete success by taking into account the full variety of participants in Division I athletics and tracking their academic outcomes.
