Nov. 7, 2015 SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV volleyball suffered a tightly contested loss in three sets to the San Diego State Aztecs Saturday night at Aztec Court. Ceannia Kincade paced the Rebels (13-12 overall, 6-7 Mountain West) in a match the host Aztecs (9-18, 6-8 MW) won by set scores of 26-24, 25-22, 25-23.
SDSU managed to register 11 more kills in a difference of only five attack attempts (129-124) against UNLV, while its offense was 81 points better in the match. The Aztecs, who hit .194 overall, topped out with a set-high .270 effort in the third after the first two frames were .182 and .146. The Rebels, on the other hand, stayed within a range of .128 (first set) and .091 (second) during the affair, which translated to a final efficiency of .113.
"We had our chances tonight, but didn't finish strong at the end of the sets," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "We need to make a lot less unforced errors and take better care of the ball."
Kincade led all Rebels with 10 kills, while Bree Hammel followed closely behind with nine of her own. The former added six digs and an assisted block to the latter's one dig and one assisted block.
Alexis Patterson had 32 assists â€" a match high â€" to go along with four digs and two assisted blocks.
On the defensive end, Carly Riehl and Alyssa Wing notched double figures in digs for UNLV with 18 and 10, respectively. At the net, Ashley Owens led the squad in total blocks with four (one solo). Haley Bilbruck and Elsa Descamps also had three total blocks apiece (all assisted).
The Aztecs got a double-doubles from Alexis Cage (10 kills/10 digs) and Lauren Utchen (18 assists/10 digs). Besides Utchen's helpers, SDSU also go 24 assists from Hailey Jones. Defensively, Alexa Saba had a match-high 19 digs.
UNLV returns to Las Vegas for three straight matches that will be contested at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels begin the homestand Thursday against New Mexico. The Scarlet & Gray will also welcome Air Force and Colorado State to town for tilts on Nov. 14 and 18. All three are scheduled for 6:00 pm first serves.
