April 18, 2015 Box Score
RENO, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team (21-24 overall, 7-7 Mountain West) and the Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack (14-29, 4-10) played to their second straight 10-5 decision Saturday afternoon at Hixson Softball Park. Unfortunately, it was the home-standing Wolf Pack who claimed the affair after its offense erased a three-run deficit with seven unanswered runs.
Sunday's affair, which is scheduled for a 12:00 pm first pitch, will decide which squad's respective athletics department will receive the three points associated with softball in the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and sponsored by Barrick Gold.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak that the Scarlet & Gray had carried into the game dating back to the 2013 campaign. UNLV had also entered the affair riding 6-0 in its last six contests against Mountain West competition.
Alyssa Cordova put the Rebels on the scoreboard first for the second straight day with another two-run single. Garie Blando and Samantha Juarez scored off the base hit after they had initially reached off a lead-off single and a walk, respectively.
Blando's single marked the 16th straight game that the 2014 MW Player of the Year has reached base safely as well as extended her season-best hitting streak to 15 contests.
In the second, UNLV strung together doubles by Brooke Stover and Blando to push another run across and up its lead to 3-0.
Unfortunately, the game would swing in the Wolf Pack's favor beginning in the home half of the second. UNR pushed three across in both the second and third innings and one more in the fourth to cap its seven-run barrage.
The Rebels were able to get one run back in the sixth - a solo homer by Blando - only to see the Wolf Pack answer with three of its own.
UNLV was able to push across one score in the seventh off an RBI single by Merina Ili to pull within five, but the third out was recorded to end the game.
UNR was paced by three-hit efforts from Karley Hopkins and Jasmine Jenkins with the former knocking in five RBI compared to the latter scoring two runs.
Megan Dortch (5-9) evened her record in this weekend's series at 1-1 with Saturday's victory behind 3.0 innings of relief work. Dortch allowed two runs off of four hits and three walks against one strikeout. She entered in relief of started Chase Redington, who only lasted 2.0 innings and allowed three runs off of four hits and a walk.
The Rebel pitching staff combined to allow 10 runs off of 15 hits. Sydney Mundell (1-2) was tagged with the loss after going 1.2 innings. Mundell gave up three runs off of four hits. Kwyn Cooper and Morgan Ettinger also saw time in the circle.
