May 22, 2015 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV signee Elsa Descamps helped France's U20 Junior National Team to a three-way, first-place tie in group play at the 2015 European Qualification last weekend in Ruma, Serbia. Unfortunately, Descamps and her teammates fell short of advancing out of Pool G due to tiebreakers - primarily ranking points.
Descamps, a 6'2" middle blocker from Toulouse, had a total of 12 kills with five each in matches versus Turkey and Czech Republic. In all, she registered 24 points with 12 blocks - 10 against Serbia, alone - to couple with the 12 kills.
France opened up with a 3-2, upset win over Serbia (May 15), before it was on opposite ends of 3-0 decisions: a loss to Turkey (May 16) and a win over Czech Republic (May 17).
"France's win against Serbia, the defending champion, was remarkable," said UNLV head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Elsa's performance was outstanding, and to register 10 blocks against a team of that caliber was exceptional."
Serbia rebounded from its five-set loss to France with back-to-back 3-0 sweeps of Czech Republic and Turkey to win pool play with a total of seven ranking points. Turkey, who amassed six points, opened up with a 3-1 victory over Czech Republic before its pair of three-setters against France and Serbia. France was third with five points, while Czech Republic finished fourth with zero points.
By virtue of its point total, Serbia advances to the U20 World Championship in Puerto Rico this upcoming July.
