LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The Rebel volleyball team (2-0) stayed perfect on the year with a quick, 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-21, 25-20) over the Omaha Mavericks (1-1) Saturday morning at the Cox Pavilion on day two of the UNLV Invitational. The Scarlet & Gray was led by Alexis Patterson, who recorded team highs in both assists (29) and digs (eight), while Ceannia Kincade and Bree Hammel paced the offense with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
UNLV outhit Omaha .316 to .224 for the match behind a slight edge in kills (43-39) on the same amount of swings (98-98). The Rebels managed to commit five fewer errors (12-17) with no more than six coming in any set. They began the match with back-to-back .300 or better efficiencies - .326 in the first and .391 in the second â€" before a .250 effort closed out the contest. Omaha, on the other hand, had its best offensive performance in the second frame (.360), but opened with a .194 and closed with a .162.
The Rebels had a trio of players notch .300 or better hitting averages off a minimum of five kills. Hammel led the squad with a .409 showing (11-2-22), while Ashley Owens and Kincade followed with .333 (6-2-12) and .321 (13-4-28) outputs. Patterson owned a .500 average (4-0-8), as well.
Defensively, UNLV had four players record seven or more digs with a team-high eight coming from both Patterson and Carly Riehl. Kincade and Hammel followed closely behind with seven apiece.
The Mavericks were led by a match-high 14 kills from Kelley Wollak, who only committed two errors in 29 swings for a .414 average. Wollak's teammate, Megan Schmale, owned a match-best efficiency of .692 with nine kills and no errors in 13 attempts.
Omaha's Sydney O'Shaughnessy dished out 31 assists â€" a match high â€" to go along with eight digs and two kills. Her digs were near the top for the team, as Wollak led the Mavs with a total of nine.
Through four matches of the Invitational, UNLV is the lone undefeated squad with Omaha and Seton Hall sitting tied for second with identical 1-1 marks. Central Arkansas is 0-2 after its loss (3-2 final score) to Seton Hall in Saturday's 12:30 pm affair.
The Rebels return to action Saturday evening in the finale of the Invitational against Seton Hall at 7:00 pm. Prior to that bout, Omaha and Central Arkansas will play their, respective, third and final matches in the two-day tournament.
NOTES: With the 2-0 start to the 2015 campaign, UNLV has now started off a season with consecutive wins on eight occasions (1979, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2012, 2013 and 2015) with seven of those occurring in the modern era of the program (1996-present) … Of those 2-0 starts five have taken place at home in Las Vegas (1979, 1999, 2012, 2013 and 2015).
