Rebels Subdue The Tigers In Straight Sets

TEMPE, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (7-5) jumped back into the win column with its 3-0 sweep (25-10, 25-20, 25-15) of the Texas Southern Tigers (2-11) Saturday evening in both team's final match at the Sun Devil Invitational. UNLV was paced by Bree Hammel's 16 kills and .652 hitting efficiency in the triumph at Arizona State's Wells Fargo Arena.

The victory was the first for the Rebels away from the friendly confines of the Cox Pavilion where they're a perfect 6-0 this season. In fact, the Scarlet & Gray has won seven straight and 10 of their last 11 dating back to the 2014 campaign. The squad returns to Las Vegas to open up the Mountain West Conference slate next Saturday, Sept. 26, at 1:00 pm against the San Jose State Spartans.

UNLV outhit TSU by .220 points (.343 to .123) with the assistance of advantages in both kills (46-33) and errors (10-20) despite attempting one less attack (105-106). The Rebels opened up the bout with a .412 hitting efficiency with 15 kills against one error in 34 swings. They hit .368 and .242 in the subsequent sets to close out the contest. The Tigers, on the other hand, committed at least five errors in each stanza, which rendered .000, .270 and .088 averages in the three frames.

The Rebel block contributed 11.0 total team blocks with five of the solo variety and 12 assisted. Ashley Owens and Alyssa Wing led the defensive effort with five total blocks apiece. The former registered one solo and four assisted to the latter's two solo and three assisted putbacks. Hammel and Sadie Stutzman had three each (one solo and two assisted).

Coupled with the blocking effort, Carly Riehl's match-high 20 digs guided the Rebels, who had 45 for the match. Ceannia Kincade added nine more to couple with eight kills.

"We were a little more offensive tonight; a lot more players were productive," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Bree really hit well and Alexis (Patterson) was so active at the net it kept them off balance. Carly (Riehl) passed well and picked up a lot of digs, which helped both offensively and defensively. It was a good way to end the tournament."

On the offensive end, Ceannia Kincade and Stutzman chipped in eight and seven kills, respectively. Alexis Patterson had five kills and hit at a career- and match-best .714 clip. Patterson, also, dished out a match-high 37 assists and picked up six digs.

TSU received a double-double from Asia Howard who paired 14 assists and 10 digs for the feat. Her teammate Chelsea Thompson had 13 assists, as well. Audriana Carson had a team-high seven kills, while Allison Woods topped the squad with 12 digs.
