MANHATTAN, Kan. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (3-3) was swept (20-25, 17-25, 22-25) by the Kansas State Wildcats (5-1) Saturday in the finale of the Varney's Invitational, which was held at Bramlage Coliseum. By virtue of their win, the host Wildcats claimed the tournament title with a perfect 3-0 mark. The Rebels (0-3) finished fourth overall, while Green Bay (2-1) and California (1-2) were second and third, respectively.
K-State outhit UNLV by 106 points (.341 to .235) behind advantages in kills (55-41), errors (12-14) and attack attempts (126-115). The Wildcats hit .405 or better in their first two sets - .432 in the first and .405 in the second â€" before they finished with a .231 in the third. The Rebels, on the other hand, led off with their best display, a .432 average in the first, but followed that figure with a .162 and .231 in the second and third frames.
The Rebels were paced by a double-double from Alexis Patterson, who combined a team-high 32 assists with 15 digs. Patterson also had two kills and two assisted blocks.
Bree Hammel, who was one of six named to the Varney's All-Tournament Team, and Alyssa Wing threw down 10 kills apiece. The former also chipped in four digs, three assisted blocks and two assists, while the latter provided 12 digs.
Ashley Owens, who had two assisted blocks, registered a team-high .545 hitting efficiency with six kills and no errors in 11 swings.
The Wildcats' Katie Brand, the tourney MVP, paired match highs in assists (43) and digs (16) for a double-double. In addition, Brand topped all hitters with a .750 average (6-0-8) and also added two assisted blocks.
K-State's offense was paced by a match-best 19 kills from Brooke Sassin, who also contributed four assists and an ace to go along with three digs. Katie Reininger and Bryna Vogel had 11 kills apiece. Its defense had two with 10 or more digs with Kersten Kober's 15 going with Brand's 16.
UNLV returns to action next week at its own Rebel Challenge, which will take place Sept. 11-12 at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels will square off against Southeastern Louisiana (10:00 am) and Portland State (7:00 pm) Friday before they face Oral Roberts Saturday (2:00 pm).
