Nov. 29, 2016 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball program has received signed national letters of intent from four student-athletes - Jill Berg, Lauren Burt, Erin Davis and Mariena Hayden - who will enroll at the University and be eligible to play for the Rebels beginning in the 2017 season, head coach Cindy Fredrick announced.
All four of the individuals, who hail from California, Minnesota, Texas and Washington, are front row players with two positioned as outside hitters, one middle blocker and one more that plays both outside and in the middle.
"We couldn't be happier with this 2017 class," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Lauren Burt and Erin Davis will be solid additions to our middle position, and could actually compete for the right side, as well. Lauren brings a lot of length and power to the court as well as strong leadership. Erin is very quick and brings a good vertical jump to her game. Mariena Hayden and Jill Berg are both six-rotation players, which is what we wanted in the outside hitter position. They hit a heavy ball and bring a fierce competitiveness to the court. Mariena and Jill can both jump topspin serve which is another plus to their game."
Berg is a senior outside hitter at West Valley High School in Yakima, Washington, who had earned back-to-back 4A Columbia Basin Big 9 Player of the Year honors. She was tabbed to the 4A CBBN's All-League team following each season with three first-team nods and one second-team. She was also bestowed the 2014 & 2015 4A State Tournament sportsmanship awards and selected to the 2015 Northwest Jamboree All-Tournament Team. During the past two seasons, she has been a candidate for the Gatorade Player of the Year and PrepVolleyball.com's National Junior of the Year and Washington State Player of the Year. She was also on PrepVolleyball.com's Preseason High School All-American Watch List. She played club volleyball for Team Yakima U-16 Gold Elite.
Burt is a senior middle blocker at Clear Springs High School in League City, Texas. During her senior season she broke the school's career and single-season blocking records with 372 and 155, respectively. She also led the team in hitting with a .307 efficiency. She has claimed all-district honors three consecutive years with a first-team mention in 2016, second team in 2015 and honorable mention in 2014. As a junior, she was tabbed to the all-county second team. Most recently, played club volleyball for AVA 16 Rox, and helped the squad to three top-10 finishes in 2015 tournament competition.
Hayden is a senior outside hitter at Belle Plaine High School in Belle Plaine, Minnesota, who helped the Tigers to a 2015 2AA state championship (junior season) as well as third- and fifth-place finishes in 2014 (sophomore) and 2013 (freshman), respectively, and a three-year combined 81-21 overall record. Additionally, she garnered Ms. Baden Volleyball recognition as the top senor player chosen by the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association. She also competed in basketball and track & field at Belle Plaine HS. Most recently, played club volleyball for Northern Lights, and helped the team to a third-place finish at the 17s Orlando tournament.
