Rebels End Year Receiving Votes In Final Poll

Dec. 19, 2016

2016 AVCA Division I Final Top-25 Poll

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Volleyball ended the 2016 season in the receiving votes category of the American Volleyball Coaches Association's Division I Top-25 Poll. The Scarlet & Gray garnered seven points in the year-end poll to sit outside the top 25 at No. 34 after its 1-1 showing at the NCAA Tournament earlier this month.

The Rebels were no strangers to the AVCA's receiving-votes category this year, as the squad was mentioned in seven straight polls from September 5 to October 17. Their highest mark was No. 31, which occurred in back-to-back surveys on September 26 and October 3.

Prior to 2016, UNLV had last received votes -- four points, No. 39 -- in the weekly poll on Oct. 20, 2008. Before that the '07 edition, which also won 24 matches and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, was listed in 13 straight polls, and that included the final one of the year at No. 36. The team did crack the top 25 at No. 25 twice (November 5 and 12) that year.

The Stanford Cardinal rightfully claimed all 64 first-place votes in the final top-25 poll after it won the 2016 national championship over No. 2 Texas. Three of UNLV's opponents this season were in the poll with BYU coming in at No. 8 and Utah at No. 25 while Boise State also received votes (60 points) to come in No. 27.

Besides the end-of-season poll news, the program saw two of its own, Bree Hammel and Alexis Patterson, named to the Mountain West's All-Conference Team. Hammel was an AVCA All-Pacific South Region Honorable Mention selection for the second time in her four-year career.

The Rebels ended the year with a 24-8 record with those 24 wins tied for the second most in program history. Coincidentally, each of UNLV's teams to appear in NCAA Tournament play ended their respective seasons with 24 wins while both only trail 2014's haul of 26 for the top spot.
