No. 25 Rebels Sixth After First Round At MW Championship

TUCSON, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 25 UNLV men's golf team shot an opening-round 2-under-par 286 on Friday during the first round of the 2016 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship, which is being played at the Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Resort (par 712 7,194 yards).

The Rebels are in sixth place, 11 shots behind team-leading Fresno State. The Bulldogs shot 13-under 275 during the first round and lead New Mexico and San Diego State by five shots. The Lobos and Aztecs are tied for second at 8-under, while Colorado State is fourth at 7-under and Nevada, Reno is fifth at 6-under.

UNR's Corey Eddings has the individual lead by a shot at 7-under 65. Fresno State's Trevor Clayton is second at 6-under, while Wyoming's Drew McCullough is in third at 5-under.

UNLV sophomore John Oda and senior Zane Thomas both led the Rebels on Friday with 1-under 71s and are in a tie for 13th. Sophomore Shintaro Ban and freshman Harry Hall are both tied for 23rd at even-par 72, while sophomore Ben David is tied for 39th at 2-over 74.

There are a total of 11 teams and 55 individuals competing.

Play at the 54-hole tournament will continue on Saturday and conclude on Sunday with 18 holes each day. The tournament is also an opportunity for the Rebels to earn three more points in the Governor's Series, presented by NV Energy and Barrick Gold. The competition between UNLV and Nevada, Reno is in its fourth year and is a head-to-head athletic and academic challenge between the longtime rivals.
