LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - For the second straight year a UNLV men's golfer has been selected as the Mountain West's Freshman of the Year. Harry Hall was announced as this year's winner as the conference released its 2015-16 awards on Thursday.
In addition, a league-high four golfers from UNLV were selected to the 10-person All-MW Men's Golf Team: sophomore Shintaro Ban, Hall, sophomore John Oda and senior Zane Thomas.
Oda is the only repeat selection from UNLV to the league's all-conference team this year as he also earned the 2014-15 MW Freshman of the Year award.
Ban, from San Jose, Calif., is third on the Rebels in scoring average at 72.39. In 31 rounds this season, he has had 14 at par or better with five in the 60s. He has one individual win (Robert Kepler Intercollegiate) and a total of five top-10 finishes in 11 events this year.
Hall, who hails from Hayle, England, is fourth on the team in scoring average with 72.59. In 32 rounds this year, he has 15 at par or better and five in the 60s. His best finish was a tie for fourth at the LMU Invitational and he has turned in four top-10 finishes in 11 events. His low round of the year is a 66.
Oda, from Honolulu, Hawaii, leads the team in scoring average at 71.69. In 35 rounds this season, he has 20 at par or better and eight in the 60s. He tied for medalist honors at the LMU Invitational and has a total of five top-10 finishes. His low round this year was a 64.
Thomas, from Las Vegas, is second on the team in scoring average at 72.40. In 20 rounds this season, he has 11 at par or better and four in the 60s. His top finish this year was a tie for third at the Mountain West Championship and he has a total of four top-10 finishes in just seven events this season.
San Diego State's Nahum Mendoza III earned the league's Golfer of the Year award, while Wyoming's Joe Jensen Coach of the Year honors.
UNLV will be playing in a NCAA-record 28th straight regional beginning on Monday, May 16. Sites and seeding will be announced on Thursday, May 5.
The Rebels are coming off a Mountain West Championship victory on April 24, and have won three of their last four events with a second-place showing during that span. Overall, they have won four team titles in 11 events this season.
